Conditions for Foreign Medical Graduates to Get Permanent Registration in India

To get permanent registration in India after doing MBBS from abroad, an Indian student must satisfy all of the following conditions. Missing even one can lead to no registration.

All conditions are mandatory

NEET (UG) is mandatory before going abroad

You must have qualified NEET (UG)

You must have qualified NEET (UG) in India as per NMC rules for that year.
This NEET qualification is compulsory for:
- Taking admission in a foreign medical college, and
- Later getting license / permanent registration to practice in India.
If you did not qualify NEET (UG), you cannot get permanent registration in India, even if you complete MBBS abroad.

Your MBBS course abroad – Duration, language & subjects

Completed a foreign medical degree course of at least 54 months (4.5 years).
Completed a 12-month (1-year) internship in the same foreign medical college/university.
Studied in a college where the medium of instruction was English for the whole course.
Studied all compulsory MBBS subjects as listed by NMC in Schedule–I (Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, OBG, etc.).

You must be eligible to practice in that foreign country

You must be registered with the medical council / regulatory body of the country where you studied, and
You must have a license or be eligible for a license to practice medicine there, like a local doctor of that country.

You must do a supervised internship again in India

After coming back to India, you must complete a minimum 12-month (1-year) supervised internship in India.
This internship must be done in NMC-approved hospitals/colleges and applied for through the Commission (NMC).

You must clear the national exam (NExT)

You must pass the National Exit Test (NExT) or any other exam that NMC notifies.
Only after passing this exam can you be given permanent registration in India.

In practice, you will first clear the required screening exam (FMGE / NExT Step 1) and then do your 12-month internship in India, as per NMC’s latest rules.
