About Medical College
Cochin Medical College (CMC), Cochin, is one of Kerala's most prestigious medical schools. The Kerala Government formed the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education to oversee the college. The college's admissions and operations are governed by the Kerala government's rules and regulations. The college now has a dazzling track record in both academics and extracurricular activities, backed by a top-notch faculty and full-fledged facilities.
Government Medical College, Ernakulam (formerly Cochin Medical College) is a medical college in Kerala that is located in Kalamassery, Kochi. It was a government-owned institution founded in 1999 by the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education, which was part of the Kerala government's Department of Co-operation. Each year, the college accepts 110 students (100 students until 2019) for the MBBS programme. On December 11, 2013, the Kerala government took control as a pure government entity.
Postgraduate courses are offered in three clinical departments (Medicine, Pediatrics, and Psychiatry) as well as two paraclinical departments (Pathology and Microbiology). On the college campus, it also comprises the College of Nursing, Biomedical Engineering courses, and Operation Theatre courses. A well-functioning canteen, gym, library, football stadium, basketball court, volleyball court, and indoor badminton courts are all available on campus. A new Superspeciality Block with a 60% completion rate has also been completed.
Classes were held at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium complex in Kochi, and the college initially operated out of General Hospital in Ernakulam and Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital in Kochi. The land for the campus was purchased at HMT Estate in Kalamassery, and the foundation stone for the campus was set by Shri E.K. Nayanar, Kerala's then Chief Minister. In 2004, the institution was relocated to its current campus in Kalamassery, and Shri A.K. Antony, Kerala's Chief Minister, officially opened it. Dr. P.G.R. Pillai was the college's first principal.
The institution is situated on 60 acres on the outskirts of the city of Kalamassery. The Medical College Hospital, the College of Nursing, and the Cochin Cancer Research Centre are all part of the campus. There are also furnished student hostels, resident quarters, and staff quarters on campus.
Cochin Cancer Research Centre
Due to an alarming increase in cancer patients in the state, the Kerala government decided to establish a cancer research centre in the state's central region. On August 18, 2014, the center's foundation stone was set. The project's entire cost was anticipated to be around 3.95 billion dollars (US$52 million).
The Medical College Hospital complex has 700 beds, a 24-hour emergency room, a medical intensive care unit, a surgical intensive care unit, a paediatric intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, and major and minor operating rooms. There is also a Burns Unit that provides sophisticated care to people with burns. The hospital offers MRI, CT, and USG scans, as well as a wide range of laboratory services.
The Medical College Hospital has a fully operational blood bank that is open 24 hours a day.
Kochi (formerly Cochin; Malayalam: കൊച്ചി) is a cosmopolitan city in Kerala with a bustling commercial port. Kochi is the financial capital of Kerala and, with a population of more than 2 million, the biggest urban agglomeration in the state. It is one of the major tourist destinations in India.
A city born in storm, nurtured in rivalry and established as battling ground for European empires. This phrase makes prefect understanding of Kochi which was formed as an ancient port city after the Great Floods of the Periyar River in 1341. With partitioning of Chera Kerala empire in 14th century, this region came under control of a new dynasty, rivaled by other local feudal lords. With the advent of colonization, Kochi became the first major battle grounds of almost all European powers. However, least it made an impact over the fortunes of this city.
