About Medical College

Kottayam Government Medical Institution is a government medical college in Kerala, India. The campus is located in the Gandhinagar-Arpookkara area of Central Kerala, about 8 kilometres (5.0 miles) north of Kottayam.

History

The institution was established in December 1962 as Kerala's third government-run medical college. From 1962 to 1970, the college was housed at the District Hospital in Kottayam before being relocated to Arpookara in April 1970.

All clinical departments were relocated to the newly constructed Arpookara campus, today known as Gandhinagar, in 1975. The neighbouring ESI Hospital was taken over the same year to build the Institute of Child Health, a children's hospital. In 1985, work on a new administrative B block began. The C block, which includes the departments of pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, and the Central Library, was added in 1996.

Institutions with a connection

Medical College Hospital (MCH), Institute of Child Health (ICH), and Kottayam Medical College Health Center are the collegiate institutes affiliated with Medical College Kottayam (KMCHC).

'Gandhinagar' is a 1974 film. The ABC and EFG blocks of the MCH were finished in 1969 and 1970, respectively.

Institute of Child Health (ICH)

The Institute of Child Health is roughly 1.5 kilometres from the main hospital site of the medical college. It was founded in 1975. It houses the paediatrics and paediatric surgery departments. It provides health services to children from all districts in central Kerala, including Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alapuzha, and Ernakulam. In this facility, 500 outpatients are treated on a daily basis. Approximately 9,750 youngsters are treated as inpatients in various specialties each year.

Leukemia ward (Walli's children cancer care centre): On October 29, 2005, a newly constructed leukaemia ward was dedicated as a sponsored programme at the Institute of Child Health.

The Institute of Child Health is home to the ICH family welfare centre, medical records library, and incineration room.

The campus has evolved into a small community with in-house banking, co-operative stores, a Post Office, canteens, hotels, and lodging facilities, as well as subsidised hostels and accommodations for professors, over the course of 36 years.

The Medical College Facility alone has 1401 beds, while the hospital is frequently at 140 percent to 150 percent full. The current facilities include: a 24-hour casualty service, a Blood Bank, modern lab and imaging services, colour doppler, TMT, holter monitor, haemodialysis, endoscopic & laparoscopic procedures, open heart surgery, a specialised pain clinic under anaesthesiology, a computerised pulmonary function lab under the Chest & TB dept, a cardiac rehabilitation centre under the Cardiology dept, a specialised trauma care centre

The House Surgeoncy Program has been praised for being rigorous, with many training possibilities not available at other universities, ensuring that graduates are well equipped for further education. In fact, the vast majority of graduates go on to pursue postgraduate studies, which is commendable given the limited number of seats available in the country for such advanced education.

About City

Kottayam is a town in south-central Kerala, sandwiched between the Vembanad Lake and the Kerala hill-country. Best known as a hub of trade and commerce, Kottayam is also a centre for education and literature, and as a centre of Kerala's large Christian population.

The lingua franca in Kottayam is Malayalam, the official language of the state of Kerala. Travellers should not face much difficulty in getting by with English, as the language is widely understood, at least at a rudimentary level. Most sign-boards above shops are in English as well. Tamil is another language that is understood reasonably widely. On the other hand, conversing with the locals in Hindi is a far more difficult task and is best avoided.
