About Medical College

Government Medical College Thrissur is a medical school in Kerala, India, that was founded in 1982. In 2009, Kerala University of Health Sciences opened its doors on campus. It is situated in the tranquil surroundings of Mulagunnathukavu (M.G. Kavu), 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) from Thrissur, on an area of more than 250 acres (100 ha). The institution was named the finest medical college in Kerala at the Swasthya Conference 2021, organised by the Kerala Ministry of Health.

History

The Governor of Kerala, Jyothi Vencatachellum, opened the college on April 1, 1982, after laying the foundation stone for the projected college building at Mulagunnathukavu on April 30, 1982. Mannuthy was the birthplace of Thrissur Medical College. By March 1983, the institution had relocated to Mulamgunnathukavu, where the original T.B. sanatorium buildings had been converted to house the pre-clinical and para-clinical departments, as well as the administration complex.

The clinical departments in Thrissur City's former District Hospital & Maternity Hospital buildings began operations on October 22, 1983. The entire District Hospital was taken over on April 1, 1985. The Mulamgunnathukavu Medical College Chest Hospital, which has 300 beds, was constructed in 1987. In 1986, the college took over Tholur's primary health centre to provide regular community and preventative care training to medical students. The primary health centres of Ollur and Erumappetty were also made available for training reasons. In 1995, work on the new medical college hospital, which will have 400 beds, began.
