Azerbaijan Medical University named after Nariman Narimanov (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan Tibb Universiteti) is the formal name of the public medical school located in Baku, Azerbaijan. Due to difficulties with translation, the school is sometimes called: Azerbaijan Medical University, Azerbaijan State Medical University, Azerbaijan State Medical Institute, or simply Medical University, with any of the preceding including the "named after N. Narimanov" or full "Nariman Narimanov". The school is named after Nariman Narimanov, a famous Azeri in Soviet politics, notably party chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union.

Unity of traditions and innovations

Azerbaijan Medical University is a scientific center that unites thousands of students, trains professional doctors and specialists, as well as scientists who guard the health of the population. The teaching process here is directly related to scientific research and achievements in health. Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) was established in 1930 on the basis of the medical faculty of Baku State University (BSU). From this point of view, our university, which is considered the successor of the medical faculty of BSU, has a history of almost 100 years.

The Azerbaijan Medical University, which has been operating for more than half a century, is now the largest scientific and medical center in Azerbaijan with a rich material and technical base, educational buildings, student dormitories, clinics and laboratories. The research laboratories of our university are equipped with modern devices and equipment, which allows to increase the importance of scientific research and create sufficient human resources in the field of medicine.

In addition to the 4 existing clinics, AMU has 6 educational buildings, an administrative building, and 6 student dormitories for 1,700 places. Only an 11-storey modern educational building can accommodate 2,500 students. There are a number of theoretical departments of the university, an Internet center, a unique library with a stock of about 1 million books and "Tabib" publishing house.

Educational System

Azerbaijan Medical University implements a credit education system that has been successfully tested in the leading countries of the world. The introduction of the credit system in the Bologna process allows for the expansion of student and teacher mobility, students' choice of subject and teacher, and specialization in their own interests. From the 2006/2007 academic year, medical education is provided in the medical-prophylactic and pharmaceutical faculties of the Azerbaijan Medical University, from the 2009-2010 academic year in the dentistry, and from the 2010-2011 academic year in the medical-prophylactic and pediatric faculties.

The adoption of the “Law on Education” of the Republic of Azerbaijan in June 2009 created favorable conditions for the transition to the credit system of education, as well as for postgraduate training through the residency system. This law directs the training of scientific and pedagogical staff to the new rules. In connection with the introduction of the credit system at AMU, new curricula, subject modules have been developed, and meetings of students and parents with teachers and other staff are held. In order to coordinate teaching with the credit system, the faculties have tutors.

In general, the educational part of the Azerbaijan Medical University refers to the Law "On Education", the Law "On Public Health", the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Improving the Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan", as well as relevant orders and decrees of the Ministry of Health. The new educational system has opened wide opportunities for students to participate in summer schools in our country and in universities abroad.

Thanks to the university's international relations, many students have the opportunity to earn credit for specialty subjects in summer schools at foreign universities. At the same time, students from universities in foreign countries, including Russia, the United States, Ukraine, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, Poland and other countries, also receive loans by participating in AMU Summer Schools.

Affiliations

The university is a member of the Caucasus University Association. In the spring of 2017, the heads of the Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) and Turkish Koç University signed a memorandum of cooperation. One of the main points of the memorandum was the consent to the exchange of doctors and residents.
