About Medical University

History of Batumi Shota Rustaveli

State University Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University is the most important center of education, science and culture of our country, which has a centuries-old history. The establishment and development of the educational system in Adjara was the subject of constant concern of the Georgian society. In 1893 the issue of opening a boys' gymnasium in Batumi was raised.

On June 26-27, 1895, the city government allocated 2,623,95 sq. M. Sajen land area. The plan for the gymnasium building was drawn up by military engineer Sedelnikov. On the first floor of the school there was a gym, and on the second floor there was a church, an assembly hall, eight classrooms, an art class, a physics room, a laboratory and a library. In July 1897, the Boys' Gymnasium became operational. On September 26, 1900, it became possible to open a women's gymnasium.

Later, in 1923, a pedagogical institute was established in the former building of the Women's Gymnasium (now №2 High School), which was later transformed into a pedagogical technical school. In 1935, a two-year teaching institute was opened in the building of the Boys' Gymnasium with 4 faculties: Georgian Language and Literature, Physics-Mathematics, History and Natural-Geography, to which in 1936 the Faculty of Physical Education was added, and in 1938 the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature. In 1938 the institute was named after Shota Rustaveli.

The first director of the educational institute was Hussein Nakaidze. Other higher education institutions of Georgia, first of all - Tbilisi State University, provided significant assistance to the institution in providing scientific staff. Distinguished representatives of Georgian science worked at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (at that time - at the Teaching Institute): Giorgi Akhvlediani, Giorgi Tsereteli, Iase Tsintsadze, Sargis Kakabadze, Simon Kaukhchishvili, Giorgi Tavzishvili, Rajden Khutsishvili, Dimitri Sh. Dzidziguri et al. It is also to their credit that the newly established high school was soon established, a system of teaching and scientific activities was established, and the growth of local scientific staff began - by 1943 there were already 5 candidates of sciences at the institute. Preparatory courses were established in July 1935, which especially helped to attract entrants from the highland areas of Adjara.

According to statistics, six hundred entrants applied to the institute in the first academic year and 219 of them were enrolled. In June 1945, a pedagogical institute was established on the basis of the Batumi Teaching Institute. Reconstruction and improvement of material and technical base began. The renovated building was commissioned in 1956, but this was no longer enough due to the growth of the institute, and in 1977 the construction of a new, five-story building began, which was completed in 1982. As a result of Georgia's struggle for the dissolution of the Soviet Empire and independence, the dream of the great Ivane Javakhishvili became a reality: "If there is a second university in Georgia, it should be opened in Batumi." According to the Resolution №453 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Georgia of September 3, 1990, the State University was established on the basis of the Batumi Shota Rustaveli State Pedagogical Institute.

After the change, in addition to the special faculty departments, 9 university departments started functioning in the school. The number of specialties has increased, law, economics and medical faculties have been established. As a result of the educational reform implemented in the country, the university moved to a two-level program: a bachelor's and a master's degree were created. Postgraduate studies also functioned in separate directions. On the basis of the Resolution of the Government of Georgia 23 37 of February 23, 2006, the study of legal entities of public law was held: Reorganization of the Institute, Batumi Polytechnic Institute and Batumi Agricultural Institute.

Through their unification, the "Legal Entity of Public Law - Shota Rustaveli State University" was established. According to the order № 103 / a of the Director of the National Center for Education Accreditation of October 27, 2006, it is an accredited higher education institution. By the Resolution №176 of the Government of Georgia of September 29, 2009 the Batumi Botanical Garden was joined by the University, and by the Resolution N 185 of the Government of Georgia of July 9, 2010 Niko Berdzenishvili and the Scientific Institutes of Phytopathology. By the resolutions №16 and №17 of the Academic Council of Shota Rustaveli State University of February 17, 2011, a scientific center was established, which included Niko Berdzenishvili's scientific directions of humanities and social sciences, agrarian and membrane technologies, and phytopathology and biodiversity.

About City

Batumi, a Black Sea resort and port city, is the capital of the Georgian republic of Adjara. Batumi Boulevard encompasses a waterfront promenade with a park and beach. The 130m-high Alphabetic Tower, adorned with Georgian script, has a seaside observation deck. The old town district is lined with renovated 19th-century buildings. North of the city, Batumi Botanical Garden showcases flora from around the world.

History
Batumi is one of the oldest cities in Georgia founded as early as BC. Its initial form – Batus – had already been mentioned in the 4th century BC. The name must have derived from the Greek word meaning ‘deep’. Aristotle (4th c BC) Pliny (2nd c AD) and others called the place “Pontus Bathea”. In antique times the local population used to have active trade relations with the neighboring as well as distant countries. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (2nd c AD) there used to be a Roman military camp on the territory of present Batumi.Batumi has always been distinguished by a favorable natural and strategic location. From the 18th century Batumi was under Ottoman rule. After the Turkish-Russian war of 1877-1878 and the resulting Berlin Treaty, Batumi became a part of Georgia. In 1878-1886, Batumi Port was announced as “Porto Franco”, something that fostered the further development of the city. After the construction of the Baku – Batumi railway system in 1883, the reconstruction of the Batumi port and connection to Baku via pipelines in 1897-1907, Batumi became an important sea terminal along the Black Sea coast. In 1918 and 1920 the city was governed by the Ottomans and the British respectively.

Climate
Batumi is distinguished by a seacoast humid subtropical climate. Winters are cold without snow and summers are warm to hot. The average annual temperature is 15 C, 7 C in January and 23 C in August. Annual precipitation is 2.560 mm. Relative humidity is 81%. There are frequent showers. It rarely snows, and when it does it melts very quickly. The average annual water temperature is 17 C at the shore. Cool breezes blowing from the sea moderate the temperature in the summer. A small natural lake is located in Batumi in the 6 May Park. Various types of subtropical plants are spread throughout Batumi and its vicinity. There are many cultivated parks, tea plantations and citrus plantations. Indigenous Colchis natural trees and shrubs have been preserved in select areas around the region.
Most Georgians do not use central heating, so although the day temperature can be warm, bring warm clothes for sleeping at night.

Cuisine
Local cuisine is distinguished by its diversity and cooking technology, table-laying and relevant rituals. It has always been complemented with fruit, viticulture and bee keeping products as well as local fish. There are almost 150 types of dishes registered in the region. The cuisine has numerous Asian influences. Dairy products are prevalent in the highlands. The most popular local dishes are: borano (cheese melted in butter), chirbuli (breakfast with eggs and walnut) and sinori (a dish with cottage curds and dough plates). A visit to Batumi is unimaginable without Ajarian khachapuri, a dish with a distinctive shape. The bread bowl resembles a boat, while an egg yolk inside represents the sun. Varieties of local sweet pastry are also famous, especially baklava and shakarlama (sugar pastry).

Currency and payment
In Georgia all payments are realized in a national currency - Georgian Lari (GEL). The most common method of payments is by cash, especially in regions and village. Plastic cards are usable only in cities. Foreign currencies can be converted at Banks and special currency exchange points (mainly in cities).
