Grodno State Medical University is the first medical institution of higher education in the Republic of Belarus, where the ISO 9001 Quality Management System was introduced and certified, which complies with the National Quality Management System (СТБ ISO 9001-2009) and with the German Quality Management System (DIN EN 9001-2008).
The University was awarded the Certificate of Merit from Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus for its significant contribution to the implementation of the government social policy and training of highly qualified medical professionals. Gr SMU received the status of an expert in the field of education and science, becoming an accredited member of the international program "Global World Communicator (GWC) “Education and Science”. Grodno State Medical University magazine is included in the bibliographic database “E-library”.
For many years the Faculty of General Medicine was the only faculty of the university and trained physicians of almost all medical specialties. The number of first graduates amounted to 248. At present, 500-600 young specialists graduate from the Faculty every year. Special emphasis is given to the training of specialists providing medical and prophylactic care in the sphere of diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of adult population.

Each generation of medical students had their own active social position, created their own atmosphere of student life. Future doctors performed many good deeds, like the participation in the work of the Komsomol organization, harvesting potatoes, donation, voluntary national teams, construction teams, working as volunteers, science clubs and amateur talent groups. In 1970-80-s University student construction brigade was the best not only in the region, but in the whole country and its members received a considerable number of awards, including government awards. Only positive feedback about our students had been coming from Siberia, Karelia, Moldavia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Labor semesters not only formed the individuality, but also allowed to gain the first professional medical experience. Many of the students during the summer semester worked as physicians in construction teams from other universities. Later on, the first in the country specialized medical teams began to be formed in the institute.
There are 4 student hostels next to the main building of the university. They can accommodate 1840 students. Two of the buildings are of flat type i.e. with attached restroom (bathroom and toilet) and a kitchen. The hostels are centrally heated (air-conditioned). Student hostels are fully furnished. Normally two or three students share one room. There are separate arrangements for both boys and girls. At the dining room foreign students are able to prepare their national food. Foreign TV channels are available as well. The maintenance personnel keeps the students hostels clean on the daily basis and make all the students living in the hostel strictly follow the rules and regulations.
Grodno State Medical University has one of the biggest medical libraries in the country. It includes over 420000 copies of textbooks as well as various supplementary materials, CDs, medical journals, periodicals.
The library is connected to the Internet and offers on-line access to the biomedical database, digital catalogues, and also uses up-to-date informational technologies that allow diversifying render services.

The Republic of Belarus is a beautiful country located on the boarders between Poland and Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and the Ukraine. Belarus is a country of blue lakes, quiet nature and hospitable people. It is a land with ancient history. The first settlements appeared on the territory of modern Belarus in the 6th and 7th centuries. Over its history different parts of Belarus comprised different countries: Kievan Rus, The Great Dutchy of Lithuania, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, Poland, the USSR. In July 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Republic passed the Declaration of Independence. Since then Belarus has been an independent democratic country complying with human rights and freedoms.
The climate of Belarus is temperate: mild humid winter and warm humid summer. The average temperature in January is -6°C (21°F), in July - +18°C (64.5°F). Belarus also enjoys 75-125 days of snow each year, with falls ranging from 15 to 30cm.
Grodno is the town of castles, churches and king palaces. In the 16th century Grodno was mentioned in Brown’s Cologne encyclopedia as “one of the most beautiful cities of Europe”. The history assigned Grodno a very interesting part in deciding fates of several big European states: here in the 13th century foundations of the Great Duchy of Lithuania were laid, here at the end of 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ceased to exist.
Grodno was founded in the 12th century. Being one of the most ancient cities of Belarus, Grodno over its history served as a king’s residence, the capital of the principality, the cultural and industrial center of the state. Grodno has preserved more historical monuments and sights than any other city in Belarus.
