In this way, MU strives to meet the growing public needs. In 1917, the Sofia Medical University was set up as a faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohrid”. In 1925, the university issued “Premedicus” which was one of the first magazines for medicine students in the world. After WWII, the faculty was split from the rest of the university and became a medical college with both a medicine faculty and a faculty for dentistry. In 1951, the School of Pharmacy was created, and after several administrative reforms, the college became a medical university in 1995 and received international accreditation soon after.
Today the Sofia Medical University is recognised for its longstanding role in academic and educational culture in the Balkan area and throughout Europe. At present, there are approximately 6,200 students conducting research and contributing to internationally recognised scientific work.
