The People’s University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women (PUMHSW) (Sindhi: پيپلز يونيورسٽي آف ميڊيڪل اينڊ هيلٿ سائنسز فار وومين‎) is a public medical university located in Shaheed Benazirabad District (Nawabshah), Sindh, Pakistan. It is the first women’s medical university in Sindh. The University is affiliated with People’s Medical University Hospital (formerly referred to as People’s Medical College Hospital or Civil Hospital, Nawabshah). 


Glimpse of PUMHS at a Glance With passion vision of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto the premier Medical College exclusive for girls, came into existence in April 1974 at Nawabshah with the name of Peoples Medical College. About 6000 lady doctors have been graduated from this college so far.Postgraduate training in this institute started in 2004 and since than about 600 postgraduate trainees has imparted training in various specialties. Initially this college was temporarily housed in portion of District Council High School consisting of a couple of hostels and auditorium (Latif Hall) along with the main building of Muslim Boarding House. The first batch was admitted with an approximate enrollment of attached to the college for the purpose of clinical teaching.

As it pursues this goal, the institution is determined to exemplify the concept of interactive, constant and enduring partnerships embracing students, patients and the public across the country in order to effectively serve those who seek knowledge and those who wish to adopt medical profession as a career. 


History 

As a result of dire need of women to pursue higher education, a medical college in Nawabshah, People’s Medical College, was established exclusively for women in 1974 by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, making it the first women’s medical college in the province. The college offered undergraduate medical course (MBBS) in its initial years and was affiliated with University of Sindh. It got affiliated with People’s Medical College Hospital in 1983. The medical college was initially located in the District Council (DC) High School (the oldest government high school in the city), consisting of an auditorium and a couple of hostels along with the main building of Muslim Boarding House. In 2004, postgraduate courses were introduced. 


A proposal of Health Department of Sindh to introduce co-education in the college was vehemently opposed by the Academic Council of the college in 2005. The name of the college was suddenly changed to Nawabshah Medical College by the provincial government in 2006, leading to uproar as its name was easily confused with Nishtar Medical College. In 2009, Sindh government upgraded the status of the medical college to a university through an act and it was subsequently renamed as People’s University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women. The University was made the centralized Admitting University of the province by the provincial committee for admission to medicine and dentistry in 2020

IHSM students are coming from different countries with their own distinct cultures, perspectives, and lifestyles. The main goal of the faculty and administration is to help them get accustomed to the new environment. Sometimes simple information about housing, food, shopping, postal and bank services is essential to keep students well functioning.

IHSM provides the opportunity to live in school dormitories and rent apartments. However, we advise to choose dormitory options for students of the first years of studies. Although modern connection capabilities highly depend on internet, postal and courier services they are still important. Many courier and postal services are available to transfer documental and non-documental goods. Along with the well-established EMS postal service, others like DHL, Express have always been available. IHSM students can receive any postal correspondence and any other messages delivered to the IHSM headquarters, which dispatch them safely to the addressees.

Hostel And Mess Facilities available at PUMHSW

University has a very good hostel campus with free Wifi access. Accommodations for students are available as singles, doubles and triples. Additionally, there are separate hostels for women and men. All hostels are furnished with beds, chairs, tables, and other necessary items. Facilities within the campus include a supermarket, a clinic, a pharmacy, etc. The hostel is monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. For Indian students on campus, Mess is also available. All students are subject to strict hostel rules. The hostel also serves Indian food.
