About Medical University

Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) (Latvian: Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte, Latin: Universitas Rigensis Stradina) is a public university located in the city of Riga, Latvia. The Stradiņš (pronounced [ˈstradiɲʃ]) name in the university's title is owed to members of the Stradiņš family who have had a significant influence on the course of community and academic life in Latvia for over a century.

Overview

The RMI was established on the basis of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Latvia, which is the direct successor of the pre-war Faculty of Medicine at the University of Latvia. The Stradiņš’ name is not a coincidence. Members of the Stradiņš family have had a major influence on the public and academic life of Latvia over the past century. The timely and highly professional activity of Pauls Stradiņš – one of the two professors of medicine remaining in Latvia after the World War II, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia – ensured continuity of the values, standards and quality of medical education and built a bridge between the pre-war and post-war education and science of Latvia, as well as laid strong foundations for the establishment and development of the Rīga Medical Institute (RMI).

RSU is the only university in Latvia that has traditionally been closely integrated within the health care system, providing preconditions for the successful operation of Latvian medical institutions. Currently nine faculties at the RSU offer Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degree, professional and continuing education programmes. Anyone, starting from a high school graduate to a PhD, can gain a new qualification, improve their knowledge, as well as give their contribution to the creation of new knowledge and technologies. The high quality education provided by the RSU gains more and more popularity among foreign students.

The Latvian Medical Student Association (LaMSA) is a non-governmental organisation that has been granted the status of public benefit organisation for the promotion of health and education and disease prevention. It is managed and operated by Latvian students and prospective health care professionals (medical-, dental- and public health students as well as rehabilitation professionals and others).

LaMSA was founded in 2000 and has been a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) since 2002. LaMSA was founded with the aim to provide students with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the medical systems and policies in other countries, to identify a variety of medical fields, to apply their theoretical knowledge to various projects as well as to acquire new practical knowledge.

The aim of the association was to ensure a united front in Europe where medical students actively promote the importance of health. Students are encouraged to take an active part in promoting human rights and to take a role in shaping the medical education system throughout Europe. They are invited to participate in exchange programs between the different countries in order to increase intercultural understanding.

In Rīga the main port of call for EMSA is at RSU. We host a variety of events such as medical movie evenings, lectures and will soon be starting up a journal club where students will be able to present their chosen research topics as a path towards research opportunities. The most important part of EMSA is that it is open to all medical students, from both Latvian and International faculties.

About City

Latvia (Latvija) is a Baltic state in Northern Europe. Latvia is bordered by Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, Belarus on the south east, and the Baltic Sea on the west. The most famous travel spot is the capital Riga, a World Heritage Site. There are also many other great places to see, both urban and rural, such as Liepaja with its unique former secret military town of Karosta and a magnificent beach. Kuldiga with Europe's widest waterfall and Cesis with its medieval castle ruins are also interesting. Tourists can also enjoy the wild beauty of Latvia's unspoilt sea coast, which is 500 km long and consists mainly of white, soft sandy beaches. Forests, which cover approximately a half of Latvia's territory, offer many nature trails and nature parks.

Climate
The best time to travel to Latvia is from June to mid September, when it is warm and plenty of local food is available. January and February are the coldest months. October and November have autumn rains and daylight is short.

Arrivals
Latvia is a member of the Schengen Agreement.

There are no border controls between countries that have signed and implemented this treaty - the European Union (except Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Likewise, a visa granted for any Schengen member is valid in all other countries that have signed and implemented the treaty. But be careful: not all EU members have signed the Schengen treaty, and not all Schengen members are part of the European Union. This means that there may be spot customs checks but no immigration checks (travelling within Schengen but to/from a non-EU country) or you may have to clear immigration but not customs (travelling within the EU but to/from a non-Schengen country).
