About University

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) was founded in 1784 by Royal Charter from King George III, to educate surgeons who at that time were trained separately from physicians. After 1886, the training of physicians and surgeons merged, and the College began to train doctors in its Medical School. In recent times the College has developed into a major international Medical School.

Primary Degree courses are provided in Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy and postgraduate studies are available in a range of medical subjects including Anesthesia, Radiology and Dentistry. In 1977 the Medical School of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland became a Recognized College of the National University of Ireland. In 2003, the Oireachtas passed a Private Act, the RCSI (Charters Amendment) Act, 2003, amending the RCSI charters to enable the College to award degrees.

These powers were commenced in 2010 following an institutional review of the College. The Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 amended the Universities Act 1997 so as to recognize RCSI degrees as degrees of the NUI, where they are approved by the NUI and while the College remains a Recognized College of the NUI. The RCSI School of Medicine is Ireland’s largest medical school and one of the most international medical schools in the world. Why Medicine at RCSI Dublin? RCSI is one of the world’s leading health sciences universities, our medical graduates are highly sought-after doctors, practicing in health facilities across more than 94 countries. We offer a five- and six-year Undergraduate Medicine programme at our Dublin city Centre campus.

During your early years studying Medicine at RCSI, you will obtain a solid grounding in the biomedical sciences and you will learn about the body structure and functions in its normal state. You will study anatomy with expert surgeons and healthcare professionals through regional cadaveric dissection. The intermediate years of the programme will focus on learning about abnormal bodily functions as well as a wide array of clinical skills workshops, small group tutorials and case-based teaching sessions.

A lot of your time will be spent in a hospital setting attached to clinical teams. The final years of the programme are spent fully immersed in various clinical specialties on a rotational basis. RCSI is committed to producing clinically skilled doctors with the most relevant and robust experience required to work in today’s health systems. Throughout your time at RCSI, you will have the opportunity to develop your clinical, communication and professional skills in a safe, simulated environment in Europe’s largest and most modern clinical simulation facility and by training in Ireland’s leading hospitals. We also provide you with many opportunities to build your career outside of the classroom through research and clinical electives as well as sub-internships.
