History 

Tbilisi Open University was founded in 2002 under a name of Georgian Tax Academy by a leading scientists and experts in the field. In 2012 due to market dynamics, new management strategy and vision, university acquired its present name Tbilisi Open University. This transformation has been predated by a number of circumstances such as growing popularity of our quality education, high employment rate of our graduates and increased demand for new programs on the market. 

Just under 20 years of its existence TOU proved to be the fastest growing institution on the market while transforming from a small size teaching establishment with just 2 faculties into the full spectrum University with 4 schools and a numerous degree programs. 

Today TOU is a vibrant intellectual community known for its cutting-edge research and the expansive scope of expertise, consisting of nearly 400 faculty members and visiting professors and strong cohorts of graduate and undergraduate students employed in public and private sector. Recent years have seen major changes in structure and development of the university. 

By establishing solid partnerships with number of international universities and adopting the best of their practice, TOU transformed into the most innovative and vibrant university in the region. Establishment of new departments and research centers such as: TOU Scientific Research Center, Center of Law and Economics, in line with hosting numerous international conferences and public events have attracted many high profile scientists, writers, journalists and politicians to TOU. 

TOU campus has continued to develop over the years with establishing a presence at the University street, in the central part of the city. The new 15.000 sq meter academic building designed by leading architects and equipped with state of the art facilities, opened its doors to students and faculty in 2017. TOU continues to move forward as one of the leading universities in the country, building upon its distinctive history, unique values and commitment to the local and global community.

The aim of the research center at TOU is to provide research leadership to our students and faculty by building and providing sufficient support to enhance research capacity and to develop networks of researchers in the field of the public and private sectors, locally, nationally and internationally. Our Career Development Center is readily available to assists all students and alumni in the development of career education, career identification and search, and pursuit of employment opportunities commensurate with formal academic pursuits. TOU maintains partnerships with leading businesses and organizations to provide students with a highly regarded professional education. 

Programs at TOU are designed in partnership with employers in the fields of law, business, finance and health. Practice Based Learning model adopted by TOU allows students to gain real world business experience and provides an opportunity to master the components gained through classroom studies and transfer it into practice. In partnership with our member institutions, we’re able to send and receive students and academics to and from our partner universities around the world to be connected to high-quality, academic programs. 

At TOU we use our teaching and research activities to participate in international networks, in order to strengthen our role as a creative hub in the international knowledge and innovation web. Thanks to our wide international institutional collaboration with preferred partners both regionally and beyond, we are able both to attract foreign students, researchers and professors and to offer our own students and scholars a foreign experience. In addition, students can choose to join one of the Student Clubs or events organized by the university or come up with their own idea on a new one and deliver it to the students self-governance for consideration.

Mission and Vision The vision of the Tbilisi Open University is to establish a favorable conditions for the development of quality education, scientific research and professional skills that are demanded and competitive at both local and international markets. 

Our mission is to equip students with the knowledge and skills essential for creating sustainable value for themselves and for the society they live in. About Medical School International School of medicine (ISM) formed in 2017. Medical Programs at Tbilisi Open University are in line with the global labor market requirements for the Medical Doctor and the Dentistry. 

Our programmers are prepared according to the standard of learning components, and offer students an opportunity to obtain quality knowledge in medical field. Combination of three main things: education, science and clinical practice - gives possibility to our students became competitive and patient oriented professional. Students are expected knowledge and practical skills gained based on global standards of World Federation Medical Education’s (WFME). The simulation and laboratory rooms based at the TOU’s Campus help students in depth analysis of clinical sciences. 

The studying process involves student- oriented modern methods, such as: Problem Based Learning (PBL), Role Play, Case-study, tutorials and etc. In the teaching - learning process Objective Structured Clinical examination (OSCE) is used. University cooperates with variety of multiprofile hospitals, such as: Medical Center VIAMED Archangel st. Michael multiprofile clinical hospital Metabolic diagnostic centre ENMEDIC LTD PINEO medical ecosystem Center for mental health and prevention of addiction Medical holding MEDISON National center of Surgery Clinical subjects are held at hospitals, distinguished studying methods are in corporate in learning process: Clinical Based Learning (CBL) and Bed side teaching (BST) methods, where student under the supervision of physician -lecturer strengthen skills and knowledge in physical examination and in other clinical skills.
