About University
Medical University - Pleven (MU-Pleven) stands out on the map of higher medical education in Bulgaria and Europe with its modern appearance of a leading educational and research center with priorities in the development of robotic surgery and telemedicine, attracting more and more Bulgarian and foreign students.
For its 45-year history MU-Pleven has been developing and strengthening. With its impressive facilities, renovated sports complex, two student dormitories, modern university library, own publishing center, the University meets all the requirements for an independent medical school. Currently, the university has a stable structure of four faculties - Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Health Care and the newly opened Faculty of Pharmacy. The Medical College and the Department of Language Teaching are also key units in the structure of the higher school. The youngest unit is the Research Institute.
The university conducts training in 14 specialties, 4 master's and 10 bachelor's programs in 4 professional fields - medicine, pharmacy, health care and public health. Today Medical University - Pleven unites a large complex of educational units, a modern preclinical base and two university hospitals - University Hospital "Dr. Georgi Stranski" and University Hospital "St. Marina" - Pleven.
A total of three robotic systems are located on the territory of the university and university bases - for teaching, research and treatment in the field of gynecology, urology and general surgery. In 2007, a Telecommunication Endoscopy Center, unique for Eastern Europe and on the Balkan Peninsula, with an experimental operating room and a virtual room with simulators, was opened at MU-Pleven.
The center is equipped with high-tech equipment, which is the most modern in the field of endoscopic surgery. Two training amphitheater halls with an audiovisual conference network for communication outside the country have been built. The system allows constant communication between the surgeon during surgery, conference and operating rooms, as well as diagnostic and therapy centers in the country and abroad.
A high-tech 3D medical table for virtual dissections has been installed. The virtual medical table is an innovative educational portal, which, in addition to training, is used for planning operations and preoperative preparation. One of the auditoriums in the center functions as a 3D studio for live surgery demonstrations, where students and medical professionals have the opportunity to immerse themselves in three-dimensional human anatomy and participate in surgery through the eyes of the surgeon. All this gives a unique opportunity to students, PhD students and graduates to study with advanced equipment. MU-Pleven is known as the first university in the country, which in 1997 introduced medical education for foreign students in English.
At the moment, 15 graduates of foreign doctors have graduated, who have found successful professional realization all over the world - USA, Europe, India and Australia. The academic calendar of MU-Pleven is full of various solemn, scientific and festive events in which the students of the higher school actively participate: official opening of the new academic year; graduation ceremonies and festive processions; official ceremonies for awarding the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa and academic lectures by world-famous scientists and surgeons; candidate student campaign with Candidate Student Day; Night of the Scientists; traditional International Scientific Conference for students and young doctors; seminar on laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery; Global Ethics Day; Nations Day; Solemn celebration on May 24 - Day of Bulgarian education and culture and the Slavic script with the award of the Rector's Award "Most Outstanding Student" for students with the highest results in education and science.
