The University of Szeged is one of Hungary’s leading and internationally ranked higher education institutions. The Greatest Community in Town The University of Szeged (SZTE) with a history dating back to 1581, is located in the sunniest city of Hungary attracting thousands of young people due to its lively, urban student life, colorful festivals and safe environment. Since Hungary is a member of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), it also has EU accreditation. According to QS World University Rankings, SZTE was the best Hungarian university in 2021. Outstanding professors have worked at the university, including the Nobel Laureate Albert Szent-Györgyi (1937), who was the first to isolate Vitamin C, extracting it from Szeged paprika and the student-faculty ratio is currently 10:1. 

It is a research university with outstanding achievements, covering 700 research areas at 19 Doctoral Schools and more than 60 full-time degree programs for international students. Scholarships, such as the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme and the SZTE START Scholarship assist students from various regions of the world to attend the University. Our student body grew to 21000, in which the number of international students is about 4100. International study programmes in various languages have been available at the University of Szeged for three decades. SZTE offers international degree programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D level and other preparatory programmes in English and in Hungarian.  Following the traditions of the University of Szeged, it unites the high level theoretical foundation with practice based on partnering as well. It considers its main objective to keep up with scientific progress, development of information technology and social demand in order to constantly develop the educational material in the field of a multi-level, multi language education. We intend to continue with the developing and constructing work launched by Kunó Klebelsberg. In the Institution Building Plan of the University, we set ourselves the goal of adhering to the labor market’s expectations both in the content and in the methodology in regional, national and international context in order to ensure that the University of Szeged becomes a competitive institution providing competency-based and practice-oriented knowledge in all horizons of our study programmes and scientific fields. We have a fierce pride that the University of Szeged was ranked the best Hungarian university in 2018, making it to list of the best 500 universities of the world. The rapid University developments conducted between 1926 and 1930 launched by Kunó Klebelsberg are worth around 80 billion HUF at today’s prices. Developments that started in 2018 could be even apostrophed as Plan Klebelsberg II. 

Our priority is to develop education, research, healthcare services as well as third mission activities including social responsibility. Developments worth billions of forints – financed by own, governmental and EU sources – involves the buildings of the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, the former Department of Infectious Diseases at the Pediatrician Clinic, the building housing the Oto- Rhyno- and Laryngology Clinic and the building of the future and so called ‘Theoretical Block’ of the Medical and Health Sciences Programmes. For the continuation of the line of clinics construction, the Life Sciences Centre will be prepared, opening up new perspectives for healthcare and informatics-related study programmes. 

The above mentioned broad range of infrastructural investments and structural improvements define the long-term future of the entire university. We are very proud of continuing the heritage of Albert Szent-Györgyi: besides our research results, this is demonstrated by the thousands of patients cured in the world-class, new 265-bed hospital building. Eleven patient care units are housed in this fivestorey complex. They include the Emergency Care Unit, equipped with the most up-to-date instruments and run by the most modern patient management system. We are very proud of having produced the most modern Surgical Centre in Hungary.
