Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Romanian: Universitatea de Medicină și Farmacie „Grigore T. Popa”, or UMF Iași) is a public university-level medical school located in Iași, Romania. Named in honor of the scientist Grigore T. Popa, it is classified by the Ministry of Education as an advanced research and education university.
Romania has a long-standing tradition in the medical field. The Romanian health care system has been in existence since the 18th century, St. Spiridon Hospital (1757), in Iași, being the oldest in the historical region of Moldavia, and one of the largest in Romania. On 30 November 1859, Surgery School of Iași was inaugurated in the Academia Mihăileană building. Founded by Nicolae Negură, it was the first Romanian language higher learning medical school in Romania.
Iași University of Medicine and Pharmacy, as one of the oldest educational places in Romania, was established on 30 September 1879, as the Faculty of Medicine, incorporated in the University of Iași. In 1948, the Medical School was associated with the School of Pharmacy and the School of Dentistry to form together the Institute of Medicine and Pharmacy (renamed, in 1991, "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy).
One of the oldest ancient times of higher education in our country, one founded in 1879, as a Faculty of Medicine, being associated more with two other institutions that complete the area of medical training - the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Dental Medicine. In 1991, the Institute was confronted with the status of the university, receiving the name of the famous representative of the School of Functional Anatomy Iasi, Grigore T. Popa. Later, the Faculty of Medical Bioengineering is included, the only one of its kind in Romania. The University imposes itself as today with a valuable teaching body as well as with a modernized basic and technical matter, suitable for carrying out the didactic process and the scientific research activity.
Established together with the University of Iași, perhaps the Faculty of Medicine begins on December 1, 1879, is to present to the Government of M. Kogălniceanu and N. Kretzulescu, as well as the shortage of medical staff after the war of independence of 1877. Throughout the time , great personalities have university markings of medicine: Grigore T. Popa, Leon Scully, Petru Poni, CI Parhon, Aristide Peride, Ion Ciure, Ludovic Russ, Ernest Juvara, C. Proca, N. Leon, V. Sion, Fr . Reiner, E. Riegler, Al. Slatineanu, I. Tănăsescu, A. Tupa, V. Rascanu, L. Baliff, J. Nitulescu, O. Franche, Vl. Butureanu, P. Vancea and others.
The University assumes as fundamental roles the formation and improvement of graduates and specialists in medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, bioengineering and health care, creating, treasuring and disseminating the values of bio-medical sciences and affirming them in the European and world circuits, continually improving the continuum. and the performances of the national public health system, cultivation of the traditions of free and academic thinking of democracy, of deontology and bioethics, in the spirit of recognizing the fundamental rights and freedoms of man and of the principles of the rule of law;

This Charter establishes the organizational framework and major options of the university community of the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iaşi, a state higher education institution in Romania, a legal person of public law and public utility. Also, the university charter regulates the entire activity of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Grigore T. Popa” Iasi, being elaborated in accordance with the provisions of the Romanian Constitution of 1991, revised in 2003, of the Law of National Education no. 1/2011, published in the M.O. of Romania, Part I no. 18, the year 179 (XXIII), of January 10, 2011, with subsequent amendments and completions, to other normative acts incident to the domain, in force at the time of its elaboration, as well as with the norms of the European Union.
The "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Iaşi is a public institution, of higher state medical education, with legal personality, non-profit character, public interest, apolitical. The charter complies with the criteria and standards of academic evaluation and accreditation, provided by law. The mission undertaken by the U.M.F. The University is a complex higher education institution, comprising four divisions: Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Biomedical Engineering. In addition, it is home to eight colleges (General Nursing, Dental Technique, Dental Nursing, Audiology, Balneotherapy and Rehabilitation, Medical Cosmetics, Hygiene and Public Health, Pharmaceutical Technique). Colleges hold three-year-courses. Students are required to pass a license examination upon completion of their studies. The Medicine and Dentistry courses both last six years.

The increase of the quality of the didactic performance and the recognition of the level of training of the students by an elite professional body have led to international recognition, including through the quality certificate granted by CIDMEF.The Faculty of Medicine has expanded its degree programs, all of which are nationally accredited by ARACIS, as follows: Medicine - programs in Romanian, French, English; General Medical Assistance; Nutrition and Dietetics. To these are added Master's programs, following a flexibility focused on the addressability of potential candidates, depending on the demands, permanently changing, on the labor market in Romania and abroad.
