About Medical University

Overview 

Hebei Medical University is a key university in Hebei Province. It was first named Beiyang Medical School. It was founded in Tianjin in 1894 by Li Hongzhang, Governor of Zhili and Minister of Beiyang. It is the first government-run western hospital school in modern China. After the Revolution of 1911, on January 19, 1912, the Ministry of Education of the National Government issued the "General Education Interim Measures Circular", and Beiyang Medical School was changed to Beiyang Medical School. On October 22, 1912, the Ministry of Education of the National Government issued the "Special School Order" "No. 16". According to this, in September 1913 (Republic of China), the Beiyang Medical School was renamed Zhili Public Medical College and began to recruit Undergraduate. 


The school moved to Baoding in 1915. On July 7, 1937, the Anti-Japanese War broke out and the school was forced to close. Enrollment was resumed in January 1946. In April 1949, it was renamed Hebei Medical College. In 1958, the school moved from Baoding to Shijiazhuang. In 1995, the former Hebei Medical University, Hebei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shijiazhuang Medical College merged into Hebei Medical University. In 2013, Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine resumed its independent organizational system. In 2016, the Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission, and Hebei Provincial People's Government formally signed an agreement to jointly build Hebei Medical University. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the school formulated the development goal of "building a high-level medical university with distinctive characteristics". 


The school adheres to the excellent school spirit of "respect, dedication, rigor and innovation". After 127 years, especially the construction and development of the 40 years of reform and opening up , it has become a comprehensive medical university integrating teaching, scientific research and medical care. In 2005, the school put forward the school motto of "Mingde Learned and Exercising Fang Zhiyuan". In 2015, the school established the school philosophy of "student-oriented and teacher-first". At present, the school has two campuses, five directly affiliated hospitals, 19 secondary colleges (departments), 28 undergraduate majors, including 4 national-level characteristic majors and 4 provincial-level characteristic majors. Fourteen majors were selected as national first-class undergraduate majors, and 10 majors were selected as provincial-level first-rate undergraduate majors. 


There are currently 20,980 full-time students, including 4,542 doctoral and master students, and 421 international students. The school has 4 mobile post-doctoral research stations for basic medicine, clinical medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, and biology. It has 6 first-level disciplines for doctoral degree authorization, 47 second-level disciplines for doctoral degree authorization; 9 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, 51 second-level disciplines for master's degree authorization; 1 doctoral degree authorization category, master's professional degree authorization There are 4 categories, degree-authorized disciplines have covered biology, basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health and preventive medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine, pharmacy, etc. 


The school has a complete medical education system for cultivating bachelor, master, doctor and post-doctorate. The school system has a total of more than 17,000 faculty members (including directly affiliated hospitals), including 1,180 full-time professional and technical personnel, 1,813 associate high-level professional and technical personnel, 363 doctoral supervisors, and 2,450 master supervisors. There are 4 research laboratories of traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, the school also undertook to edit and publish 8 national and provincial academic journals. In recent years, the school has continuously strengthened international exchanges and cooperation, and has become an important window for foreign cultural and academic exchanges in Hebei Province. It has established close cooperative relations with 33 medical schools and scientific research institutions in 12 countries including Japan, South Korea, the United States, Belgium, Russia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. School History In 1894, the Qing government approved the Beiyang Medical School established by Li Hongzhang in Tianjin;


 In 1912, it was renamed Beiyang Medical School; In 1913, it was renamed Zhili Public Medical College; In 1915, Zhili Public Medical College moved from Tianjin to Baoding; In 1921, the Medical College, Agricultural College, Higher Normal School, and Law and Political Science merged to form Hebei University, and the Zhili Public Medical College was renamed as the Department of Medicine of Hebei University; In 1932, the Medical Department of Hebei University was established independently as Hebei Provincial Medical College; In 1937, after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the school was forced to close, and enrollment was suspended for 9 years; 


The Hebei Provincial Medical College reopened in Baoding in January 1946, and the first class of students after the resumption of enrollment began in the same year; In 1947, Hebei Provincial Medical College temporarily moved from Baoding to Tianjin to continue running the school; Tianjin was liberated in January 1949 and renamed Hebei Medical College in April of the same year; In 1952, Hebei Medical College moved back to Baoding from Tianjin; In 1958, Hebei Medical College moved from Baoding to Shijiazhuang; 


In 1970, Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine merged into Hebei Medical College and was renamed Hebei New Medical University; In 1979, Hebei New Medical University restored the name of Hebei Medical College (the independent establishment of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine was named Hebei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine); Anshan Health School, established in 1949, was later renamed Angang Health School and Huashan Metallurgical Medical College; 


Moved to Shijiazhuang in 1988 and changed its name to Shijiazhuang Medical College; In May 1995, Hebei Medical University, Hebei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Shijiazhuang Medical College merged to form Hebei Medical University. (In 2009, Shijiazhuang Health School was merged into Hebei Medical University. In April 2013, Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine resumed its independent organizational system and separated from Hebei Medical University.) After separating in 2013 in Hebei Medical College, School school is still called Hebei Medical University.

Shijiazhuang is a young city. It was an unimportant town until the building of the Zhengtai and Jinghan railways saw it become an important regional transport hub. Captured by the PLA under the leadership of the CPC in 1947, it was the cradle of the new China, and for three years housed the headquarters of the CPC.

Nowadays it is the capital and main economic center of Hebei and a relatively important city in China. Shijiazhuang is the largest pharmaceutical base in China and is as well an important center in the textile, IT, manufacturing and chemical industries. In 2007, it was listed as one of the top 15 economic powers in China.

According to the latest census figures, Shijiazhuang has a population of 2.19 million in the city proper, with a further 7.4 million people living in its 20 affiliated counties. It's a modern city that's in the process of building many new apartment buildings, shopping malls and is renewing its image. The city has a very serious air pollution problem.

Flights to different destinations have become more convenient since local low-cost airline Spring Airlines established a base at Shijiazhuang airport in early 2011. Daily flights on Spring Airlines depart for Xiamen, Chengdu, Dalian, Shanghai, Shenyang, Hohhot, Nanjing and Guangzhou, with flights to Hong Kong three times weekly. Spring Airlines provides a free airport shuttle bus from Shijiazhuang (as well as the surrounding cities of Baoding, Hengshui, Xingtai, and Cangzhou) for all Spring passengers as the airport is located about an hour outside of downtown Shijiazhuang. Lots of travellers also elect to take the train to Beijing and fly from there due to extra flight options, connecting by the express trains (2 hrs to and from Beijing).
