The Medical University of Białystok (UMB; Polish: Uniwersytet Medyczny w Białymstoku) is a medical university founded in 1950 in a historic building from the 18th century, Branicki Palace, which is the most historically important building for the city of Białystok. The university is home to the Medical Department with a Division of Dentistry and a six-year M.D. program taught in English (English Division), Pharmacology Department with Medical Analytics Division, and a Nursing and Health Protection Department with divisions in Physiotherapy, Medical Rescue, Obstetrics, Public Health and Nursing. Overview

The Medical University of Bialystok is a modern, rapidly growing public university, with a mission to provide the best possible education for professional, responsible, leading-edge medical staff; to carry out scientific research at the most advanced level worldwide; to implement innovative solutions in cooperation with medical service providers; and to respond to social needs. Our University is continuously investing in the professional growth of our research and teaching staff. Researchers travel worldwide with numerous scholarships, internships, programs and study visits to the best research and teaching centres. The group of international researchers working in partnership with our University is larger every year. They represent global research and development centres famous for their proactive growth.

Their activity contributes to the academic achievements of the University staff. 131 full professors and 162 associate professors in a group of nearly 800 academic teachers represent one of the highest proportions of all universities in Poland. Staff employed at the Medical University of Bialystok are experts in their respective fields of science, members of science committees, journal editors, with many of them holding the positions of national and regional consultants. The School’s dynamic and creative staff are also a huge asset for the process of obtaining external funding from science and EU funds, and in the commercialization of research.

The Medical University of Bialystok is a precursor and leader of pioneering work on artificial intelligence in medicine, and a contributor to large-scale research on genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, radiomics and bioinformatics. The first Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine in this part of Europe was opened at MUB. Its role is to collect and analyse complex, superior data sets concerning patients suffering from lifestyle diseases. The University is running a population-based study, singular in this part of Europe, covering 10,000 inhabitants of Bialystok (the Bialystok Plus Study). Unique research programs are pending in the field of personalized medicine and lifestyle diseases. One of these projects builds a reference model of biobanking and a service supporting diagnostics and treatment of early stages of non-small cell lung cancer.

In the course of implementing the projects, we built a database, remarkable in the European perspective, containing the results of whole genome sequencing for several hundred patients with oncological diseases (such as lung cancer, ovarian cancer) and other lifestyle diseases (such as diabetes, obesity). The University pioneers in the field of advanced banking of biological material from patients with lifestyle diseases. The collected data are fed to the Polish HD Medicine Database, designed as a source of in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of such diseases as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and more, and as groundwork for development of new therapeutic applications.

The Medical University of Bialystok is working on the launch of certain research and development projects implemented in partnership with other research organizations. History The history of the Medical University of Bialystok is the continuation of the 18th century tradition of the practice of medicine and public health care in Bialystok. During that period in history, there was a Palace school for midwives in Bialystok, which was later transformed into the Institute of Obstetrics (one of just a few in Poland), established by Dr. Jakub Michelis in the 19th century. The Institute hosted a clinic that operated both as a healthcare establishment and a teaching facility. The university was officially founded in 1950 as the tenth Doctors Academy in Poland, soon to be rebranded into the Medical Academy. The Branicki Palace became the main seat of the new institution. Tadeusz Kielanowski, the first Rector of the Medical Academy of Bialystok, came from the Lviv academic community.

Many academic teachers were pre-war professors and graduates of universities in Vilnius, Krakow, Poznan, Warsaw, and Lublin.MUB first students building Dormitory. 168 students started their studies at the Faculty of Medicine. Most of the theoretical study departments were housed in a building adjacent to the palace, the today’s Collegium Primum, formerly the Teacher Training College. The buildings originally donated to the University were destroyed in 1944 and the rebuilding process began after World War II . With the establishment of the Medical Academy, even its professors and students helped rebuild and upgrade the destroyed buildings.

The hospitals that were open at that time in Bialystok, upon surviving the war, became the clinical base for the new University. At the beginning of the academic year 2011-2012, two new buildings for academic and research purposes were opened: the Euroregional Pharmacy Centre, and the centre of the Faculty of Health Sciences. The year 2008 was a milestone year for the university, as the act of renaming the Medical Academy of Bialystok to Medical University of Bialystok came into effect on March 22nd. The new University status was assigned to the school as a response to the challenges of the contemporary era and as an accurate representation of the teaching models and research advancement.

One of the oldest student organizations is the University Choir. It was founded in 1951 by a group of students, but today it is a mixed choir which consists of students and doctors of the university. The choir performs oratorio works as well as sacred and secular a cappella compositions. The University Choir takes part in many international festivals and competitions in both Poland and abroad. The UMB Choir won 2 gold medals, in the Sacred Music and Contemporary Music categories, at the 2019 'Mundi Cantat' International Choir Competition in Olomouc, Czech Republic.

The Students’ Scientific Society is an organization of medical students and interns engaged in the work of Students’ Scientific Circles operating in almost all departments of the university. They carry out laboratory experiments, conduct clinical research and acquire practical skills. Some of the students are co-authors of publications in Polish and foreign professional journals. The Polish Dental Students Association was founded in 1997 in Wroclaw. The main goal of the association is to create the structures that represent dentistry students and look after their business in different areas.

In the spring semester of 2018, the American Medical Student Association - Białystok Chapter (AMSA Białystok) was established at the Medical University of Białystok. The organization's goal is to help students which aim to become doctors in the United States in the process of taking the USMLE and their future career path. AMSA Białystok also organizes social events, fundraisers and community service programs, as well as collaborating with UMB's other student organizations, such as IFMSA Białystok and GMS (German Medical Students) Białystok e.v.
