About Medical University

History

Southern Medical University (SMU), the former First Military Medical University, was founded in October 1951 and notarized as one of the premier medical universities in 1978. The university was handed over to the local government of Guangdong Province and meanwhile renamed as Southern Medical University, in line with the command by the State Department and the Central Military Committee of PLA in August 2004.

At present, SMU has become one of the 8 prestigious universities authorized by the Ministry of Education to run the pilot 8-year medical education program. SMU, located at the foot of the picturesque Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, has two campuses, the main campus and the Shunde campus, covering an area of nearly 1.68 million square meters, with a construction area of 0.845 million square meters. In 2008, the university was included in the Guangdong provincial 211 Project, one for key and priority colleges and universities.

Among the provincially-run, SMU is ranked first concerning the pass rate of scientific research program and second in terms of the funds obtained. In recent college ratings of Chinese mainland universities, SMU has been ranked around the 100th in terms of the comprehensive strength, at the third among the medical universities and the sixth among the universities in Guangdong Province. At present, it becomes a candidate university jointly to be constructed by the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Committee and Guangdong Provincial Government.

Southern Medical University Student Union, founded on December 25, 2005, is under the leadership of the Party, self-management, self-service, under the guidance of the school the student mass organizations of self education, the presidium of the directly affiliated institutions of the Guangdong Students’ Federation.

There are one president, seven vice presidents and fourteen members in the third session of third Student Union.

The curriculum consists of general fundamental courses, basic medical courses, clinical courses, general electives and practice teaching:

General Fundamental Courses: these are those general education courses SMU offers, including Situation and Policy, Military Theories, Ideological and Political Theories, College English, Physical Education, Guidance to College Students to Start Their Undertakings, Career Plan, Computer, and Mental Health of College Students. These subjects lay down a sound basis for students to study in depth and develop their scientific thinking and skills, basic research qualities and healthy personality.
1) Basic Medical Courses: those subjects centering on basic theory, basic knowledge and basic skills in the specified discipline help build a reasonable medical knowledge structure and lay a good basis for students learning and research.
2) Clinical Courses: those which (including extended ones) are necessary for the discipline and other related disciplines, which help to cultivate primary thinking and practicing ability necessary for students’ clinical practice in the related disciplines.
3) General Electives: those available for all students in SMU, including humanities and social sciences, natural sciences, life sciences and physical education.
4) Practice Teaching: those subdivided into intra- and extra-curricular practicing, covering exposure to clinical medicine in the early stages, clinical clerkship, clinical internship, research training, community internship and social practice, with the main aim to cultivate clinical competence, practical ability and research capacity.
In addition to the above, a hidden curriculum system has been set up on the basis of campus environment, organization institution and cultural atmosphere. In this way a students' value, behavior and professional attitude have been cultivated through a positive but indirect imperceptible manner.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission at Southern Medical University

Candidates must have passed higher secondary examination with Science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Candidates must have an aggregate of 50% in PCB or more in your 12th results.
Students must be 17 years or more for medical education in this university.

Admission Process at Southern Medical University

Step 1: Complete the online application provided by the University. or Fill out the course registration form from our website then we will be doing all the below steps .
Step 2: Print out the application. Send the signed form along with the required documents listed below to the university.
Step 3: Scan the documents and email them to the admissions office with a subject line of 'Application for Admission' in the body of the email.
Step 4: Documents can be submitted only until the application deadline. Be sure to submit all documents before the final submission date.
Step 5: After verification of the student's documents by Medical University, the University will send the student the acceptance or rejection letter accordingly.
Step 6: Payment of initial fees should be done once the candidate is accepted. Upon receiving the acknowledgment letter, the student will receive their fee.

Hostel And Mess Facilities available at Southern Medical University

University has a very good hostel campus with free Wifi access. Accommodations for students are available as singles, doubles and triples. Additionally, there are separate hostels for women and men. All hostels are furnished with beds, chairs, tables, and other necessary items. Facilities within the campus include a supermarket, a clinic, a pharmacy, etc. The hostel is monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day. For Indian students on campus, Mess is also available. Guangzhou has a humid subtropical climate, influenced by the East Asian Monsoon, with plenty of rainfall throughout the year, measuring 1.736mm on average. Extremes have ranged from 0°C (32°F) to 39°C (102°F). Winters are mild with the average temperature in January being 13.9°C (57°F). Cold weather is virtually unknown in Guangzhou since the cold air masses originating in Siberia don't make it this far south and are blocked by the mountains in the north. Small portions of them however, may manage to penetrate through the mountains and reach the city, pushing low temperatures down to 5°C (41°F), but very rarely below, although due to the strong cold winds and humid weather, it does feel very chilly, while Snowfall is extremely rare, with the last occurence being in 24th January 2016, 87 years after the previous one. Summers, like the rest of southern China are hot and very humid. The heat is sweltering, due to the fact that the average high temperature in July is 32°C (90°F) and the average humidity is 82%, making the atmosphere very unpleasant. Daytime highs may surpass 35°C (95°F) up on occasion. October and November are inarguably the best months to visit Guangzhou and most of rain falls between April and September.
